I'm meant for better things.

The rest of you are welcome to stay out there in the wild. Enjoy the next Arctic Blast. Frankly, I can do better.

I've found a lovely warm garage. They didn't even notice me moving in.

They even run a space heater in the little foyer that opens into it, but the bourgeois cat who lives here needs it more than I do. I just hunker down out here in the garage itself, among all these boxes and pieces of furniture, and nobody knows I'm here. Seriously, they have NO idea how long I've been in residence. I tolerate the cat, who's a grouch but who is the reason for the endless supply of fresh water and Vibrant Maturity [tm], so I don't quibble.

That Vibrant Maturity is good stuff, man.

The people who run this place are dolts. There's nothing subtle about them. As usual, they've turned out the lights, and clunked back upstairs, making it abundantly clear that they're out of here for the night, and they even put out an extra bowl of food. So now I can just sashay out and help myse--

Oh $#!t.

That looks like a well-used Havahart. Where did you take the little guy?

Almost 20 years ago, when we lived in the city of Sunnyvale, we had an outdoor cat whose food and water dishes were on the front porch. One early, early morning, when I had a daybreak plane to catch, I opened the front door on my way out at about 4am -- and found a tiny 'possum at the cat's dishes. I'm not sure which of us was more surprised, but I'll never forget its response. It sat up, cocked its head, and kneaded its front feet together as if to say "Oh no, oh no, busted, what ever will I do now?"

All I could do was laugh and tell the little guy, "Okay, get lost now."

Never saw him again, but I've never lost that mental snapshot.

8~) Thanks, everyone - yes, there's always some sort of animal drama around here!

Possums look rather eerie, but they're nothing like as scary as a raccoon. They're much less aggressive (tho i wouldn't want to corner one) and ...well, not terribly bright. And usually not too cute, though this one was nearly as cute as the little one Sherwood described - ours was a rather handsome specimen with lovely shaggy fur. Most we've seen have looked rather bedraggled and pitiful.

We trap more often than I write about - raccoon and possum intruders think we run a 24/7 buffet, and they're not far off. We now take our inmates to the back of Brookgreen Gardens, the undeveloped side. Release 'em right by the sign that says "Wildlife Sanctuary."

I'll see your drama and raise you a couple of sitcoms.

['Possums are] ...well, not terribly bright.

Somewhere, Pogo is sad. But he recognizes that the statement is true.

I expect Fort Harrington does have a lot more animal drama ... but Larry wants birds! That would change things.
